Dad, in his infinite stupidity, erased one of his harddrives on the compy I gave him. Now he can't get online and the compy crashes when you try to access it over the network so I can't give him IE5 back. I can't see his compy across the network either.
Bright boy also had the system folder on both harddrives and was switching which one was the startup drive. He also likes to run the buggy version of Norton to 'fix things' and constantly screws around with items in the system folder and prefrences.
I'm really having a great month- NOT!
And now I'm off to the pharmacy to get mom some of the expensive crap she needs for her melting legs. (She couldn't be bothered to put anything on it before it reached a critical stage because then we couldn't have drama. Bleh)

Can you burn a copy of your IE5 on your computer and then give him the disk? I know nothing about IE, I use mozilla, or safari, or camino.
There is always the public library in the interim. I know that well, because...
My current drama is that my phone is out AGAIN. I am writing this from the library. I had lots o'stuff to do on the net this weekend, and here I sit again with no phone. I seriously want to bite the phone company or better yet turn a Komodo dragon loose amongst their cubicles.
Oh, and the stupid yahoos are definitely going to drag this out into foreclosure, rather than do a quit claim. So they will waste the money on lawyer fees that they could have saved towards getting a new place during the grace period I offered. Plus they were stupid enough to tell MY lawyer that he has been out of work since May. Where is the gene pool chlorine....
PLUS I had the added "fun" of having to chew out my lawyer for dropping the ball.
Feh.
At least it rained yesterday, but then again, that's why my phone is out!

The cost of the meds for my mother was $98. I now have the only money left, a grand total of $20.
We have no clue how much her ER visit will cost. She, of course, waited until the clinic was closed before enacting the drama of needing a Dr, even though I'd been trying to get her to go for three days.
And the idiot has done the dramatic, "Never mind I'll just buy a new computer." Yeah, which will last exactly as long as this one did, if it isn't blown up sooner since he is going to get another shitball PC.
Like I said, I need that clorine too.

Doesn't your mom have medicare? If she is getting SS or SSI it seems as though she should.
Something else to look into, when I was destitute, the local hospital in MI had a "means test" which if you qualify, makes the hospital bills go away (although not the doctor bills). Her income might be low enough to qualify if they have a program like that here.
The ER thing vs going to the Clinic is something she definitely needs to stop doing. There is no way that anybody who doesn't have a juicy fat insurance policy can afford repeated trips to the ER.
I'm also VERY sorry about the whole computer nightmare. Good grief on a rail! 13 computers. I'm only on my 3rd, and all three are still running (even the crappy Compaq)!
If you want a break from the parental units, just let me know. We can go over to Eureka Springs to sightsee and window shop and I'll buy lunch, or go to a park, or whatever you would like.

*looks at self in the mirror* Okay, it's like this, I need a day off, okay?
*stares back at self* Umm, sure. One day right?
Gah... yep, I need out of here no doubt about it.

The best day to go to Eureka Springs is probably Friday. Everything is open without being quite as crunchy tourist packed as the weekend. If you are in immenent danger of parenticide, we can go sooner though.
I'd probably hit your door around 10ish, it's not so far from me to Eureka, but I have to add in an addition 45 min travel coming down from Monett.

Re: :::hugs:::
I have been totally stalled in writing for two days because fixing -his- computer has had to be the #1 priority.My mom is very unhappy because he has ruined computer after computer because he cannot just leave things alone. He constantly has to mess with things that should not be touched. Like running disk utility repair programs when there is -nothing- wrong with the computer, or putting the system folder on both drives, or the time he deleted ALL the .exe files from his PC to 'save space.' Then there was the day he decided to install a drive and when the case wouldn't close right he slammed his hands down on it and broke the motherboard.
He was bitching about me not 'fixing things' today and mom said, "Well considering this is the fifth computer you've ruined in the last 6 years, and then expected her to fix, can you blame her for not wanting to be bothered?"
The truth is, when he fucks shit up I WANT it fixed so he will leave me alone. But I cannot get disk utility on my computer to do anything today but make coasters out of my CDRWs so I couldn't give him what he wants on CD. (I spent 3 hours trying to get it to work.)
We did manage to get his compy to connect to mine and I got IE back onto his computer that way.
Now he can leave me alone.
I think that mom is ready to shoot him. She is very sick of the whole computer issue with him. We can't go more than a week without him screaming that something isn't working. Well duh, maybe if you hadn't thrown away important files that the programs need to work, or partly erased a drive, or trashed something else, or run a buggy disk utility you've been told to stop using...
Today he decided that he needs to 'buy my own network so my computer will work.' We have a case of the functionally computer illerate thinking he knows how to fix things when all he can do is further ruin everything.
I won't even go into the details of the time he nearly destroyed every computer in my small press publishing office by installing software that was -already- on the network, or the day he 'fixed' things by taking the fonts out of the fonts fonts folder and moving them elsewhere. (These two little incidents that took him seconds to accomplish together took about 100 manhours to repair and almost cost us a $2500 printer.)
I have been dealing with this moron for 15 years and he has nuked a total of 13 computers in that time, I kid you not. (This is every computer he has ever owned or touched, including three computers where he worked. He was fired from the job and didn't understand why. Gah!)
Well maybe I can get some actual writing done tomorrow. I can only hope.

Re: :::hugs:::
is this your step dad? (you said 15 years you've been dealing with it.)suppose password protecting with an admin only pw to keep him from pulling most of the tactics isn't an option (i.e. he'll bitch until they're taken off)? If the program files are PW protected, that would seem to solve some of the problems.

Re: :::hugs:::
Yes, my step dad.And he is bitchy because he cannot access -my- computer whenever he pleases because the network is password protected.
I also found out why i can't see his computer on the network. He password protected it so I can't see him, and now he can't remember what the password is.
*sighs*
