Diets for White Collar Migrant Workers
A long time ago, I or someone I knew coined the phrase "White Collar Migrant Workers" to describe contract work, i.e., job shopping, or contract engineering. I had used that term in Howling Dead to describe geeks who insist on living that sort of freelance lifestyle. A friend of mine pointed out that I could discuss the diets for such people in terms of what the nutritionists now recommend and that's eating foods according to color. So, naturally, we came up with the geek version: Doctors and nutritionists are now saying to eat food according to color. But for the geek, it gets a little dicey picking out what's healthy and what's not. So, here are my geek choices for color: Red -- Red M&M's, Pizza with red sauce, rare steak or hamburger, red hots, Hawaiian Punch, Mountain Dew Code Red. Blue --Booberry Cereal (difficult to find except around Halloween), Blue Nerds, Blue M&Ms, blue popcicles, Gatoraid. Green -- that stuff around sushi rolls, pickles, lettuce on Big Macs, green M&Ms Yellow -- Twinkies, Lemon pudding, Lemon Jello, Red Bull (looks yellow to me), Mountain Dew Brown -- chocolate, coffee, tea, Coke, Pepsi Orange -- Tang, Sunny-D White -- Bread, Rice Bonus foods (satisfies most of the colors): Trix, Froot Loops, M&Ms, Skittles, Starbursts, Pez So, a typical geek meal plan might be: Breakfast: cold pizza, mountain dew Snack: Twinkies, Coffee Lunch: Big Mac, Coke Snack: M&Ms, Red Bull Dinner: Froot Loops, Pez, Sunny-D Snack: Red Bull, chocolate chip cookies, M&Ms, Coffee, three mountain dews... You get the idea. Note that the snacks give you enough sugar and caffeine to keep you going until about 3 am. Current Mood: amused |

Puppies don't moo.
I was on my shaman in travel form where someone came up, yelled "Puppy!" and started patting me. I played along and barked at her , but then I saw one guy keptt running into the wall so I mooed at him. She gave me a sad face and said "Puppies don't moo!" lol. Current Mood: amused |

Christmas 2009 pictures
Here's some Raymond Pix! With my dad: With me at my company's Christmas party. He wasn't feeling well: All my Santa pictures with him are blurry. Probably because I was clicking away fast trying to get the picture before he either melted down or pulled off Santa's beard. |

Looking for a critique or two . . .
Anyone interesting in reading over Changeling and letting me know what you think before I send it off into the cold, unforgiving world? It's a long one -- clocking in at 6,652. I'm tentatively thinking of sending it to Realms of Fantasy. It's a fantasy story about a woman looking for her child and finding some hard truths along the way. I'm looking for some punctuation checking (I've got a terrible habit of messing up my dialogue tag punctuation) and a general thumbs up or down. Let me know if y'all are intrigued :D Thanks :D |

Neighborhood stuff
* Husband and I both got drivers licenses corrected to reflect new address. Also swang by registration. Time clocked, minus drive, in both places combined was under fifteen minutes. Total. For both of us. And that was only because the clerk helping D was interrupted by a phone call. Not only were they speedy and very personable, but they took one of the most flattering ID photos of me that I've ever had done. * Neighbor across the way came over and we chit chatted for a bit. She dropped by a platter of Christmas goodies. I can tell it is a difficult time for her. Not only is today the anniversary of her father's death but she's just been told her mother has a very aggressive form of lung cancer and has been given only six months to live. Her mother, who is in her late 70s, lives in New Hampshire. Pam, the neighbor, moved down here one year ago because of her own medical reasons, now feels guilty about being so far away. It was hard to know what to say. I told her that D's mom also passed from cancer and that I knew what it was like to be nearly a days drive from loved ones, especially when a medical emergency arises. I told her that I sincerely believe that everything happens for a reason and that her mother would not want her to have delayed her move, especially since it impacted Pam's day-to-day health. There was a lot more but I'll spare you the blow-by-blow. At one point, I thought my neighbor was going to begin crying. I can tell everything is taking a toll on her and that she tries to put a good face on during the holiday season. I hope that what I said gave her at least some tiny measure of comfort but I honestly don't know that it did. Very sad. If I'd known her better, I would've given her a hug. Maybe I should have anyway. Told her if she needed anything or if she just wanted to talk, to feel free to drop by any time. * Funny but when we were first looking in this neighborhood, we talked with Pam's husband. It was about three weeks before we put a bid in on the house. He was sitting out on the porch and we went over and greeted him. I didn't think he would remember us...after all it would be two more months before he would see us again. We had talked with him all of five minutes that day. According to Pam, before we placed the bid, several other couples had come to inquire about the property. John, her husband, amazingly remembered us. He told her while the house remained vacant that we were nice and he hoped we would we move in. He didn't want to be neighbors with the other prospective couples--who according to him, were markedly less friendly. * Odd fact discovered today. John doesn't drive on interstates or busy roads. Neither do I. |

Groceries, Tippy Boards, and Holidays I spent most of the day either at the physical therapist's or buying groceries for the upcoming holidays. I thought it'd be kind of rude to have our traditional Christmas Eve roast the day before my mother in law came into town and then say what a lovely roast we had and too bad you couldn't join us. Kind of rude, so I decided that maybe I should cook something else for Christmas Eve. I saw this pork loin recipe and while I don't have the bone in, I figured I could probably cook a most excellent pork loin in this fashion. So, I bought Kosher Real Salt and sea salt to cook it in (Good Foods has it available in bulk). I'll let you know how it turns out.
I ended up purchasing enough fruit for a small battalion, plus salad, plus vegetables, plus lunchmeats, snacks and other items. I was intrigued enough to buy Maple Mead from Hidden Legend Winery in the hopes that it's sweeter than the spiced mead I tried from them. I'm going to probably open up the Blackberry Mead on Christmas Eve.
One thing the physical therapist is having me do is use the tippy board for balance and making me do squats on it. The tippy board is a board where it rocks back and forth or side to side depending on how you use it. Basically, I'm to get in touch with my inner ninja and balance on the damn thing. It's a pain in the butt, but I refused to use helper poles because, damn it, I don't need no stinkin' poles. I did okay, but I need to work on the balance part. On the less than positive side, it did cause my plantar fascitis to flare up a bit. Sigh.
I'm starting to look forward to Christmas and Christmas eve. I forgot to wish everyone a Happy Winter Solstice yesterday and Happy Yule, (Not to mention forgetting the Hanukkah wishes) but I figured that you're already following on Twitter or Facebook anyway, so I've covered that. Word Count Happy Dance
Did 4,250 words on a new short story entitled Changeling yesterday. And they're all good words too! Now I've got to finish the story in 750 words to be within the guidelines. Too funny. |

A rare Christmas Meme Dear Santa...
Dear Santa,
This year I've been busy!
In August I turned jane_lane18 in for littering (3 points). Last Saturday I ruled Iran as a cruel and heartless dictator (-700 points). Last Friday I set kantrip's puppy on fire (-66 points). Last month I saved a busload of nuns in Angola (326 points). In June I helped countessmary across the street (6 points).
Overall, I've been naughty (-431 points). For Christmas I deserve a lump of coal!

Daniel Watch Update: Plane is leaving San Fran on its way to Dallas. For those on Daniel Watch: we just got an update from our escort through our agency and Daniel did well on the flight, is "friendly" and "all boy" and "very active". The flight was a bit delayed departing from San Fran but is now shown as having departed the gate. Reason for delay: customer service. Answer to my question: Did he get sick? No. He did great. :) We're getting ready to head to the airport.

Long overdue response to amaz0n_princess's Borg Meme
This is what happened: • Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."
• I'll respond to the first five by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity (I'll ask more questions if more people want to play...)
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions (I'll also answer more, if asked)My questions from J, now answered: ( cut so's I don't hear about it later...;) )So...anyone who wants to play, just do the same: leave "Resistance is futile" in the comments. Edits, Craters and Christmas Cards It's this time of the year when I realize with all desperation that I'm not getting a Christmas letter out this year. You know the type. The ones that say "see all the awesome things we did this year -- our tour of Europe, the big book tour my publisher sent me on and the picture of us with the winning lotto tickets..." You know what I'm talking about. Seeing as I didn't get any of that, it seemed a little melodramatic to say something along the lines of "I went to cons and met people and worked my butt off..." Not incredibly exciting. Pasco, Washington and Tulsa, Oklahoma were about as exotic as I got to. Despite all my writing, everything fell behind and I've been digging myself out of craters.
Instead, people will be lucky to get a cheap Christmas card this year. Sad but true. The crater I've fallen in is too damn deep to contemplate and I'm spending a lot of time digging myself out of the hole. Problem is most of the work that is that hole doesn't put food directly on the table in an immediate fashion, so I've had to focus on stuff that did. Money is a serious motivator.
Today I worked on an article that one editor would've passed with flyiing colors, only I got the other editor who wanted something different. Sigh. So, it needs to be edited again. I decided to let it sit and work on another article, hoping that I can simply worry about those edits later and work on articles that will sail through. In the meantime, I got Samurai Son out to the second readers/first readers. It's half edited because otherwise I'd never get it out to them. This will motivate me to editing the other half.
Sigh. Current Mood: working |
